The child begins his journey with an awareness of life. Similarly, the artist embarks on a creative journey by observing the world around them. They then consciously reflect on the surface of their work, taking initiative to capture their observations and feelings. Through honesty with themself, the artist gradually uncovers the subconscious, enabling them to effortlessly create lines, colors, and express their emotions and passions. Ultimately, they may strive to reach the unconscious, where the creative form transcends even the artist's own explanation.
The painting "November 11, 2011," as the title suggests, represents a time-bound memory and a significant milestone on the artist's creative path.
The scene offers a peculiar vista. In the distance, a building is obscured by a strange wall of trees, while a narrow path emerges in the foreground between rows of twisted trees. The work reflects the artist's conscious state at the time, utilizing composition, form, and color to convey their personal sentiments about the scene. While seemingly simple, this piece marks a fundamental shift in the artist's way of expressing emotions through painting.
The lack of overtly symbolic details deprives the viewer of an immediate interpretive framework. However, the expressive brushstrokes on the canvas still communicate a sense of the artist's emotions. The scene presents a space of absolute stillness, hidden behind trees with stark branches and large bushes simplified into color patches, evoking a slightly uncanny atmosphere.
This painting represents the right half of a two-part landscape series depicting the meeting point between the artist and the talented young artist Dawni de Leon. Dawni painted the left half of this diptych, a portion the author has not yet seen.
